While SEO companies can provide clients with a valuable service, some SEO companies have given the industry a bad name by using aggressive marketing techniques in an attempt to manipulate search engine results in an unfair way. This can result in your website being removed from search engine results or lowered in ranking.
A common scam is the creation of shadow domains that funnel users to a website using redirects. These domains are often owned by the SEO Company that claims it will be working on their behalf. If the relationship ever fails the company may redirect the domain to another competing website. If this happens then all of the money that invested into the SEO would benefit a competing website.
Another practice is to create doorway pages that are loaded with keywords on your website. The SEO Company will promise that this will create more relevant queries. This is false since individual pages cannot be ranked highly for all of the keywords contained inside. In some cases the doorway page will contain hidden links to the SEO Company’s other clients.
Beware of SEO companies that claim they can reach #1 or the top page of results in a popular search query. They often claim that they have priority submit to Google or a special relationship. Google does not provide priority submit to any company other than itself. In fact, the only way to submit a page to Google is through their add URL page or normal Webmaster Tools.
